Class Names

Since we are MoonDance Studios (after the song "Moon Dance", by one of my favorite singer/song writers Van Morrison) it seemed fitting that when naming our classes we use the names of the moons of Saturn and Jupiter. The students voted for their favorites and the results are listed below.

Ananke ("a NANG kee") is the thirteenth of Jupiter's known satellites. Ananke was the mother of Adrastea, by Jupiter.

Atlas is the second of Saturn’s known satellites. Atlas was a Titan condemned by Zeus to support the heavens upon his shoulders; son of Iapetus and the nymph Clymene; brother of Prometheus and Epimetheu.

Callisto (“ka LIS toh”) is the eighth of Jupiter’s known satellites and the second largest. It is the outermost of the Galilean moons. Callisto was a nymph, beloved of Zeus and hated by Hera. Hera changed her into a bear and Zeus then placed her in the sky as the constellation Ursa Major.

Calypso (“ka LIP so”) is the eleventh of Saturn’s known satellites. In Greek mythology Calypso was a sea nymph who delayed Odysseus on her island for seven years.

Carme (“KAR mee”) is the fourteenth of Jupiter’s known satellites. Carme was the mother, by Zeus of Britomartis, a Cretan goddess.

Elara (EE lar uh”) is the twelfth of Jupiter’s known satellites. Elara was the mother by Zeus of the giant Tityus.

Europa (“yoo ROH puh”) is the sixth of Jupiter’s known satellites and the fourth largest; it is the second of the Galilean moons. Europa is slightly smaller than the Earth’s Moon. Europa was a Phoenician princess abducted to Crete by Zeus, who had assumed the form of a white bull, and by him the mother of Minos.

Helene is the thirteenth of Saturn’s known satellites. Helene is the name of an Amazon who battled with Achilles.

Leda ("LEE duh") is the ninth of Jupiter's known satellites and the smallest. Leda was queen of Sparta and the mother, by Zeus in the form of a swan, of Pollux and Helen of Troy.

Pallene (“pə-LEE-nee”) a very small natural satellite of Saturn lying between the orbits of Mimas and Enceladus. Pallene was one of the Alkyonides, the seven beautiful daughters of the Giant Alkyoneus.

Pan is the innermost of Saturn’s known satellites. Pan was the god of woods, fields, and flocks, having a human torso and head with a goat’s legs, horns, and ears.

Pandora (“pan DOR uh”) is the fourth of Saturn’s known satellites. In Greek mythology Pandora was the first woman bestowed upon humankind by Zeus as a punishment for Prometheus’ theft of fire. Entrusted with a box containing all the ills that could plague people, she opened it out of curiosity and thereby released all the evils of human life; wife of Epimetheus.

Phoebe (“FEE bee”) is the outermost of Saturn’s known satellites. Phoebe is almost four times more distant from Saturn than its nearest neighbor (Iapetus). Phoebe is the daughter of Uranus and Gaia; grandmother of Apollo and Aretemis.

Rhea ("REE a") is the fourteenth of Saturn's known satellites and the second largest. In Greek mythology Rhea was the sister and wife of Cronus (Saturn) and the mother of Demeter, Hades (Pluto), Hera, Hestia, Poseidon (Neptune) and Zeus (Jupiter).

Sinope (“sah NOH pee”) is the outermost of Jupiter’s known confirmed satellites. Sinope was a woman said to have been unsuccessfully (!) courted by Zeus.

Telesto (“tah LESS toh”) is the tenth of Saturn’s known satellites. In Greek mythology Telesto was a daughter of Oceanus and Tethys.

Thebe ("THEE bee") is the fourth of Jupiter's known satellites. Thebe was a nymph, daughter of the river god Asopus.
